Multi-Level Garden Design in Stalybridge: A Landscape Architecture Response to Challenging Terrain
Location
Mottram Old Road, Stalybridge, Greater Manchester
Local Authority
Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council
Plot Type
Private residential garden with steep level changes
Project Type
Landscape architecture and multi-level garden design
Our Role
Landscape design and coordination. We led the layout, zoning, and structural strategy for the external areas, ensuring the new garden was both beautiful and functional across all levels.
Challenge
Transforming a large, sloping rear garden on Mottram Old Road, Stalybridge into a functional and visually engaging outdoor space. The existing site had multiple level changes, requiring a carefully considered landscape strategy to ensure usability, safety, and cohesion.
Approach
We undertook a full landscape architecture design, addressing the site’s varying levels through a series of stepped terraces, retaining elements, and transitions that created defined zones for relaxation, planting, and play. Our design combined practical earthworks with a contemporary aesthetic, balancing structure and softness.
Solution
The reimagined garden now offers usable, attractive outdoor spaces that flow naturally across the site. Defined terraces and walkways improve access and maximise enjoyment of the space, while soft landscaping enhances the connection to the surrounding setting. This project reflects our ability to resolve complex topographies through creative, buildable landscape design.
